Margaret Brown
Health Consumers of Rural and Remote Australia Inc
Role in Organisation National Chair
Brief Bio
Margaret Brown lives on a property in the SA Mallee where they grow grain and breed sheep for fat lambs.  Their nearest town is Lameroo where they have a hospital, which does not have any procedural or obstetric facilities and has Aged Care beds and a Hostel.
Lameroo has two female GPs who come each week and a male GP who comes from the Riverland one day a week. They are soon to have a full time practising GP, from Sri Lanka which is wonderful for the community.
Due to having a son born with mild brain damage Marg has learnt, over the years, how lacking the health system is in regard to support and access to specialists, and a high degree of mental health stigmatization, especially when one lives in a rural area where everyone tends to know everyone else.
Marg’s background is entirely as a community representative and is not in an employed position.  She has a very strong passion in respect to consumer participation and representing rural and remote consumers, when and where possible.  Some of the groups she is involved in are:
  • National Chair, Health Consumers of Rural and Remote Australia
  • SA Dental
  • Breast Screen SA
  • Medicare Australia
  • Country Health SA
  • Director of NT General Practice and Training Board
  • Lead Community Contact/Student Liaison for Flinders University Rural Clinical Schools, and John Flynn Scholarship Scheme
  • National Telehealth Advisory Committee.
